In the early 1980s, over-production in the Kiwi wine industry pretty much sent the 75-year-old Glenvale winery to the wall. It was rescued from near-oblivion by Croatian-born George Fistonich, the owner of another well-known winery, Villa Maria, and renamed Esk Valley. What perfect timing! New Zealand Sauvignons were about to hit the big time - Gordon Russell, just returning from the mandatory back-packing trip around Europe, also landed on his feet. He went to work for Villa Maria and was appointed Esk Valley winemaker in 1993. Today he is famous for his elegant, handcrafted wines. This gooseberry-fresh Sauvignon slips down a treat on its own and partners fresh asparagus, grilled chicken, poached salmon or creamy pasta dishes perfectly.
