This skilfully crafted 2010 (yet another excellent German vintage) is an absolute delight, full of ripe citrus and apple fruit. Helmut Dönnhoff's great family winemaking traditions in the Nahe region date back to 1750 and, as the German Wine Guide notes, his wines are "as stunning as the best produced in the Mosel and Rhine". In 1999 he was crowned Germany's 'Winemaker of the Year'. Riesling is "indisputably the greatest white wine grape in the world" (Jancis Robinson MW) and while it grows elsewhere, no other country comes close to matching the quality of German Riesling and few winemakers are the equal of Dönnhoff. This Spätlese is sublime on its own and accompanies a wide range of food, including spicy Asian cuisine and fish dishes.
