Bordeaux is of course one of the world's best known red wine regions, but its whites certainly deserve more attention - and Château Grand Ferrand makes a fine introduction. Typically for the region, it combines Sauvignon Blanc, for its grassy, fresh, citrus character, with Sémillon, bringing more honeyed notes of melon and peach, while a dash of Muscadelle adds a lifted aroma. This clever combination means that the wine can be enjoyed young and fresh, its aromas to the fore, or cellared to allow the Sémillon to broaden out, giving a luxurious honeyed character. From a superb vintage, Château Grand Ferrand 2009 is deliciously ripe, yet piercingly crisp - perfect as an apéritif but rich enough to match sauced fish and white meat dishes.
