With the rise in popularity of fruity New World wines, it's easy to forget the pleasures that can be afforded by the Loire's bone dry whites with their piercingly crisp fruit. This is a fresh Chardonnay from Luc and Jérôme Choblet's Parker-rated family estate, in the excellent Côtes de Grandlieu sub-appellation of Muscadet. Dating back to 1864, the domaine includes some of the region's best terroir and has been managed in an environmentally friendly manner for the last 30 years. Melon de Bourgogne is the main grape here, but Chardonnay also performs well on the warmer, sunnier slopes, producing zippy melon and pear notes. 2010 was a great vintage, so expect vibrant intensity in this white. Refreshing as an apéritif, with salads or seafood.
