Vermentino is grown throughout Italy, but "the best wines come from Tuscany and Sardinia, where they have a weight and breadth not found elsewhere" (Oz Clarke, Grapes and Wines). This fine example comes from Alberto Antonini's own beautiful estate, Poggiotondo, in eastern Tuscany. This area was once covered by the sea, as evidenced by the gentle undulating hills and the abundance of seashells and marine fossils in the soil - providing ideal conditions for vinegrowing.Hand harvesting and careful cool vinification ensures exemplary intensity and freshness, while a small portion fermented in French oak lends complexity and notes of toasty spice. Treat as you would a fine Burgundy and enjoy with your best fish or white meat dishes.
