Rioja's Tempranillo grape is becoming increasingly fashionable Down Under, where it takes on delicious liquorice and deep cherry flavours in the warm sunshine. This fine example is from a family cellar founded by Italian settlers Mario and Aurora Littore in 1953 - though it was their sons Vince and David who turned the winery into the thriving business it is today. The Littore philosophy is very much to push the accepted boundaries and over the last 10 years they have been planting unusual grape varieties such as Fiano, Moscato, Tempranillo, Graciano and Malbec alongside the big international stars. Soft enough for solo drinking, this pure Tempranillo probably shows at its best with lamb dishes, sausages or a cheesy vegetable bake.
